ESSAY:

Pause or Rewind: which would you chose?

While looking through my past work, this essay caught my attention. This was one of my college application questions. Given all that has happened in 2020, I may be inclined to request a fast forward button.

So, which would you choose? Feel free to share your answer in the comments below.

Finally, I unearthed my camera. It has been hidden away on a shelf for over a year. I did not know where to go or what type of pictures to take. So, after running an errand with my mom in Lowell, I went in search of inspiration. The first thought that came to mind was to find water; Lowell has many historic waterways. We drove along the river and canals until we found a spot with parking nearby. I soon discovered that the water was frozen in the canal we had chosen. However, when I began to walk along the canal, an old rusted winch caught my eye.

I spent the next hour or so taking pictures of the winch, some beams, and a nearby bridge. While I was taking pictures of the nearby bridge, a passerby, who had been walking the loop along the canal, paused so I could finish taking my pictures. He said something along the lines of “you haven’t moved more than fifty feet” and “there is so much beauty here.” I couldn’t agree more.

My journey to find water lead me to an unexpected source of inspiration.
